Many authors talk about the importance of having an regular time and a place to write. Our Awestruck friend made a great point about being "compelled to write" but at the most inconvenient times and places. I'm glad you brought that up because it's important to discover ways to capture those moments. You are so right - that the inspiration will likely fade before "the tools are all in place to write." And you're right that losing the inspiration is indeed discouraging. So I strongly encourage all of you to experiment with ways to capture those inspirations - whether jotting down a few key words on a napkin, or by carrying a tiny notebook or at least an index card in your pocket - at all times.
However, "today's topic" is about the idea of establishing a regular time to write - whether daily, weekly, or whatever works for you. If you want to start a daily writing habit - or at least work toward that goal - ask yourself what is reasonable to expect of yourself. Might you be able to set aside 20 minutes a day? Maybe 15 or even 10 minutes is more likely.
Maybe you don't like the idea of a specific time frame. Several authors suggest a minimum number of words - perhaps 300 words a day.
So how about it? Is this something you want to try? Are you at a stage where you'd like to develop a daily writing habit? If so, what might be a reasonable minimum goal for you?
